What is your organization’s core expertise, and what unique knowledge, technology, or capabilities do you bring to CustomAI?
The University of Granada (UGR) participates in CustomAI through two distinct departments. The Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence develops advanced intelligence and security solutions in knowledge management, decision support systems, and Artificial Intelligence for situational awareness and risk assessment, utilizing graph databases, data science, and advanced AI techniques. The Department of Criminal Law brings deep, consolidated expertise on ethical, legal, and privacy issues.
What is your specific role in the project, and what is the single most exciting outcome you hope to achieve with the results of CustomAI?
UGR leads the knowledge management aspects of the project, primarily within the Work Packages dedicated to “Use Case Requirements and Toolkit Framework Design” and “Toolkit Framework Development and Tools Integration.” UGR also leads the design and development of the decision support system—including its machine learning components—under the Work Package for “Design & Development of AI-Based Decision Support Tools for Customs.” On the legal side, UGR contributes significantly to legal, ethical, privacy, and data management.
The most exciting expected outcome is the development of a Knowledge Repository and an AI-based Decision Support System, both of which are core elements for the Virtual Customs Control Office concept.
What is the core team involved in the project?
Prof. María J. Martín-Bautista is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Granada and Head of its Laboratory of Information Technologies and Artificial Intelligence. Dr. M. Dolores Ruiz, Dr. Bartolomé Ortiz-Viso, and M.Sc. José Rivas comprise the computing team. Representing the legal department is Prof. Javier Valls, Professor in the Department of Criminal Law.
If you had to summarise your organization’s enthusiasm for this project in one sentence, what would it be?
“Research and development of intelligent, innovative, and adaptable solutions to support decision-making processes and increase the efficiency of customs control at the EU’s external borders.”
