What is your organization’s primary domain of expertise, and which distinctive capabilities, technologies, or know-how do you contribute to the CustomAI project?
The Romanian Customs Authority (AVR) is the national authority enforcing customs legislation, managing customs duties, ensuring safety and security, and protecting the financial interests of both Romania and the European Union. Operating across critical gateways like the Port of Constanța (the largest port on the Black Sea) and complex land and rail border crossings, our core expertise lies in balancing high-volume international trade facilitation with rigorous border security. We bring to CustomAI extensive operational insights into non-intrusive inspection (NII) technologies and risk-based management, offering a real-world perspective on how advanced screening and scanning operations run at a vital geopolitical gateway.
How would you define your specific role within the project—including the work packages or tasks you lead or support—and what is the single most compelling result or milestone you aim to reach through CustomAI’s innovations?
As an end-user beneficiary, our primary role is to connect advanced AI research with practical, daily customs operations. We contribute actively by defining real-world operational requirements, outlining the logistical and threat constraints at our borders, and validating project tools under realistic conditions. The single most exciting outcome we hope to achieve is the successful integration of AI-driven support systems for cargo screening analysis—reducing manual processing times, minimizing human error, and creating a faster, smarter digital framework to intercept illicit trade while enabling seamless legal commerce.
In a single sentence, how would you capture your organization’s dedication and enthusiasm for participating in this project?
The Romanian Customs Authority is dedicated to anchoring CustomAI’s innovation in real-world border operations, combining non-intrusive inspection expertise and risk analysis techniques, both improved by AI to forge a smarter, faster, and more secure external border for the European Union.
